Anansi and the wisdom pot

🕸️ Anansi and the Pot of Wisdom

Long ago, in the lands of the Ashanti people, the trickster spider Anansi believed he could gather all the wisdom in the world.

He asked the sky god Nyame for the gift of wisdom, and Nyame, amused, agreed to give it to him. Anansi collected bits of wisdom in a large clay pot and tied it to his belly.

But as he walked through the village, he feared others would steal his treasure, so he climbed a tall tree to hide it.

Yet the pot kept swinging and bumping against the tree. From below, his young son shouted, “Father, why don’t you tie it to your back instead?”

Anansi paused. “If my child can give advice… then I clearly don’t have all the wisdom!”

Frustrated and embarrassed, Anansi dropped the pot. It shattered, and the wisdom spread across the land, reaching everyone — young and old.

And that is why wisdom is shared, not kept.
